US-29 O’Henry Boulevard

Greensboro, NC

In eastern Greensboro, North Carolina, the I-40/I-85 Business interchange is one of the region’s busiest and most complex corridors—moving traffic between Winston-Salem, High Point, Charlotte, Danville, and the Raleigh-Durham region. With direct connections to downtown via Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and US 421, safe merging and reliable ramp operations are critical to keeping the entire network moving.

CHALLENGE

Improving safety and flow in a high-volume interchange meant working in tight quarters with no margin for error.
With lane closures limited primarily to weekends, crews had to execute major work in compressed windows while coordinating multiple trades, sequencing materials precisely, and reopening lanes on time.

SOLUTION

This 1.018-mile project delivered targeted upgrades to improve capacity, safety, and performance. Crews added a lane to the off-ramp to relieve congestion, modernized storm drainage to handle heavy rain events, and installed a new single-faced wall to protect bridge substructures.
The work included roadway widening, paving, drainage, lighting, and signing—supported by 2,700 cubic yards of excavation and 11,700 tons of asphalt—resulting in a safer, more efficient interchange that keeps traffic moving through one of Greensboro’s most critical corridors.
