I-81 TROUTVILLE REST AREA
Troutville, VA
The Troutville Safety Rest Area along Interstate 81 South received targeted roadway and site improvements designed to make entering and exiting the facility safer for trucks and passenger vehicles merging at highway speeds. The work is part of the broader $2 billion I-81 Corridor Improvement Program, focused on improving safety and reliability along one of Virginia’s most heavily traveled freight corridors.
CHALLENGE
Rest areas have a unique safety problem: drivers are rapidly slowing down to exit into the facility, then upon leaving, they are quickly accelerating to enter back into fast-moving interstate traffic—often with limited distance to do it. At Troutville, the existing ramp lengths left too little space for safe deceleration into the rest area and safe acceleration back onto southbound I-81, increasing risk during peak travel times.
SOLUTION
The project extended both ramp movements to give motorists the space they need to slow down and speed up safely. The off-ramp into the rest area was extended by approximately 500 feet, and the on-ramp into southbound I-81 was extended by approximately 2,100 feet, improving merge conditions and overall driver safety. Supporting work included earthwork and grading, reinforced soil slopes, storm drainage, stone subbase, asphalt paving, storm pipe rehabilitation, concrete flatwork, barrier wall, guardrail, and lighting—delivering a safer, more modern rest area approach and exit.
