I-74 / NC 68 INTERCHANGE

Guilford County, NC

The I-74 (US 311) and NC-68 interchange was rebuilt into a safer, higher-capacity connection for the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, the major population hub that includes Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. To keep traffic moving through one the corridor’s most critical junctions, ramps were upgrade, NC-68 widened, and interchanges reconfigured.

CHALLENGE

This interchange was congested and constrained by an older diamond configuration that forced turning movements to compete at-grade on NC-68, including left turns at the interchange. The corridor also needed more lane capacity, better pedestrian accommodations, and improved signal spacing on nearby roads.

SOLUTION

Branch converted the existing diamond interchange into a partial cloverleaf, adding loop on-ramps in the northeast and southwest quadrants to eliminate left turns on NC-68 at the interchange and improve overall traffic flow. The project delivered a new six-lane divided roadway with three 12’ travel lanes and two 12’ paved shoulders in each direction, along with a variable-width grass median.

NC-68 was widened to three 12’ lanes each way and upgraded with curb and gutter and 5’ sidewalks. To improve operations near the interchange, Branch also modified Gordon Road, Cypress Court, and Hilton Court for better signal spacing. Supporting work included bridge widening and rehabilitation, storm drainage, water and sewer improvements, sound wall construction, signalization, and concrete flatwork—bringing the entire interchange system up to modern standards for safety, capacity, and connectivity.
