Fall Line Trail Northern Section

Henrico & Hanover Counties, VA

Branch, working with Timmons Group, delivered the Fall Line Trail Northern Section Design-Build. It was the first VDOT-administered segment of the larger 43-mile shared-use path that will run north–south through the Richmond region and connect seven localities: Ashland, Hanover, Henrico, Richmond, Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, and Petersburg. This initial 4.5-mile section links Ashland to Henrico County by way of Hanover County.

CHALLENGE

The corridor presented a uniquely delicate and constrained environment. The alignment follows a historic trolley line corridor, passes through Dominion Energy transmission right-of-way, and crosses the Chickahominy River at the Hanover/Henrico border. The project required work in environmentally sensitive areas with wetlands and permitting limitations. Keeping the project moving demanded proactive stakeholder coordination, early risk resolution, and careful management of historic-resource requirements.

SOLUTION

Branch executed a design-build approach that paired disciplined planning with targeted early coordination. The team coordinated with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to reduce risk of schedule impacts tied to wetlands and permitting.

Within 30 days of Notice to Proceed, Branch led a focused kickoff meeting to identify and resolve anticipated risks. Field execution included clearing; erosion and sediment control in highly sensitive areas; earthwork; drainage improvements; MSE construction; bridge work (including the Chickahominy River crossing); and asphalt paving. The project delivered a critical segment that advances a region-defining trail connection.
